1 September 2010 - Campbell not surprised by Blair's book

DUP East Londonderry MP Gregory Campbell has said the revelation in Tony Blair memoirs about the truth being stretched will not come as news to most unionists. Commenting Mr Campbell said,

"When negotiating with Tony Blair our emphasis always lay on actions not words.

We never accepted words because we knew how easily they had been ditched in the past. Indeed, that is why we ensured upfront delivery by the Government and SF before we entered government.

Tony Blair's hand-written pledges are a text book example of his approach to the truth as they were put up in lights before the 1998 election and dumped immediately afterwards.

Whilst the former Prime Minister may have felt twisting the truth beyond "breaking point" was a good negotiating tool, I trust he has now learned that it was not. Rather it was a hindrance to progress."
